Laying the groundwork for future mobility is a major undertaking—and sometimes, it requires going underground.

The Baltimore Sun broke the story that Elon Musk’s The Boring Co. has been granted tentative approval by Maryland officials to dig part of the tunnel that will serve as the path for SpaceX’s Hyperloop between Washington, D.C. and New York.

Reports The Sun:

It would be the first portion of the underground system that Musk says could eventually ferry passengers from Washington to New York, with stops in Baltimore and Philadelphia, in just 29 minutes. Maryland’s approval is the first step of many needed to complete the multibillion-dollar project.

Neither The Boring Co. nor SpaceX had any official comment beyond thanking Maryland officials for their support.

Maryland says Hyperloop will be treated like any other underground utility in terms of what’s needed for construction. In other words, The Boring Co. won’t be clearing any red tape–just piles of dirt and rocks.

While moving people in levitating cars sounds a bit more complex than moving voltage through wires or water through pipes, it’s encouraging to see Maryland’s full-throated public support for what is shaping up to be be among the most disruptive (in a positive way) transportation projects on the drawing board.

“Our administration is proud to support The Boring Company to bring rapid electric transportation to MD – connecting Baltimore City to D.C.,” Maryland Governor Larry Hogan tweeted. “Get ready!” he added in a follow-up video tweet.
